Forty years on from beating the Super Eagles to win their first Cup of Nations, the rivals meet again in Abidjan in the last 16 Roger Milla’s exploits at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, with the Indomitable Lions, made the then 38-year-old Africa’s first and most recognisable global superstar. But it was in Abidjan, in March 1984, that Cameroon, with Milla playing a starring role, beat Nigeria 3-1 in their first Africa Cup of Nations final, beginning the story of how they became the most dominant sub-Saharan African team at the Afcon, with five titles. Tournament in 2022 was overshadowed by poor crowd control and deaths as Jay-Jay Okocha predicts an open competition Ivory Coast is about to stage its second Africa Cup of Nations but with the first happening 40 years ago, not many of the country’s more than 29 million people have experienced the tournament. Michel Brizoua-Bi, a lawyer and former senior figure in the Confederation of African Football (Caf), is among the exceptions. Brizoua-Bi was 18 when, in March 1984, he and a 50,000 crowd, at the Félix-Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, witnessed the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, captained by Théophile Abega and inspired by Roger Milla, win the first of their five Afcon titles, beating Nigeria (known as the Green Eagles at the time) 3-1 in the final. Onana, 27, had walked out on Cameroon after a row with Song at last year’s World Cup in Qatar but returned after a reconciliation with the coach to help Cameroon qualify for the Cup of Nations finals in the Ivory Coast, which gets under way on 13 January.
